The Pagosa Springs Pirates entered their tilt with the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers with 18 consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with 19. Pagosa Springs walked away with a 61-48 win over Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday. Given Pagosa Springs' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 23rd, while Montezuma-Cortez is ranked 196th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Blake Laner was his usual excellent self, scoring 17 points along with five rebounds and four blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Ridge Wilson, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Montezuma-Cortez lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Caidin Leonard, who scored 16 points. Trey Hall was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with two steals.
Pagosa Springs pushed their record up to 20-1 with that victory, which was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.2 points per game. As for Montezuma-Cortez, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-11.
Pagosa Springs will be playing in front of their home fans against Monte Vista at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Pagosa Springs focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Saturday. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they will head out on the road to face off against Mancos at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
