Canyon del Oro fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Pueblo on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 58-49 to the Warriors. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Canyon del Oro came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 86th, while Pueblo is ranked 238th).
Canyon del Oro's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Mykael Nunez, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and two steals, and Will Dixion who scored 13 points along with two blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Nunez has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Isaiah Gill, who scored four points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Salpointe Catholic earned a 61-52 victory over Nogales on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Salpointe Catholic.
Salpointe Catholic can attribute much of their success to Antonio Amador, who scored 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Bobby Smith, who scored ten points.
Canyon del Oro has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 16-7 record this season. As for Salpointe Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season.
