The Varela Vipers will take on the Schoolhouse Prep Wolfpack at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Thursday just wasn't the day for Varela's offense. They fell 5-0 to Dade Christian back in March. The Vipers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Varela got a good showing from Jayden Lamb, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Lamb has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances.
Meanwhile, Schoolhouse Prep came into Monday's contest having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They put the hurt on Northwestern with a sharp 14-1 win on Monday. Considering the Wolfpack have won six matchups by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Camilo Urena looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Schoolhouse Prep is 2-1 when Urena allows two or fewer hits, but 8-9 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Kaeno Hinkel, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Schoolhouse Prep: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 7-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Calex Cosculluela, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
Schoolhouse Prep always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2025.
Varela's loss dropped their record down to 4-8-1. As for Schoolhouse Prep, the victory got them back to even at 10-10.
Varela might still be hurting after the 7-0 defeat they got from Schoolhouse Prep when the teams last played back in March. Can the Vipers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
