The James F. Byrnes Rebels waltzed into their match on Friday with seven straight wins but they left with eight. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 58-57 win over Spartanburg. Given James F. Byrnes' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while Spartanburg is ranked 41st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Will Fowler continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 21 points along with six rebounds. Kayzzin McDowell was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
James F. Byrnes has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 15 of their last 16 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 19-4 record this season. As for Spartanburg, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 12-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. James F. Byrnes will challenge Boiling Springs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Boiling Springs is coming into the contest on a five-game losing streak. As for Spartanburg, they will head out on the road to take on Gaffney at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Gaffney knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven matches -- so hopefully Spartanburg likes a good challenge.
