West Jones extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region 3 this week by beating Brookhaven, 27-17. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Wayne County was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting McComb. The War Eagles came in at 21 in the state poll after placing at number 33 last week.
The Panthers' dynamic duo of Zach Smith and Fred Trevillion proved tough for West Jones to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Smith threw for 171 yards and one touchdown and Trevillion had 103 yards receiving. Genoa Sartin helped Brookhaven's passing attack out by catching three balls for 33 yards.
Donte' Purvis was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 22 carries, he ran for 207 yards as Wingfield fell to Scott Pierson's team. Pierre Pryer also contributed to the rushing game with 105 yards on the ground.
The Tigers' Alex Woodall and Quatavious Smith have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Woodall has thrown for 756 yards this season, while Smith, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 24 catches for 463 yards. Trey Keyes from the Mustangs leads the league in rushing with 711 yards.
The marquee game in 5A Region 3 this week will be the clash between West Jones and Wayne County. The Mustangs enters the game ranked 14th in the state, while Marcus Boyles' team ranks 21st.
There should be lots of points scored when West Jones and the War Eagles face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Mustangs comes in having scored 210 this season, while Wayne County has scored 190. West Jones scored 27 points last week as it defeated Tommy Clopton's team.
