Basketball Recap: Purnell Swett Comes Up Short

If Purnell Swett was riding high fresh off their 57-31 takedown of Douglas Byrd two weeks ago, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Purnell Swett Rams took a 70-65 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cape Fear Colts. Even though they lost, the Rams' still made a splash on offense and bumped their average scoring up to 51 points per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

When it comes to explaining why Purnell Swett lost on Tuesday, don't look at Collin Sampson. Despite the final result, he went 9 of 15 en route to 30 points and five rebounds. That's the most points Sampson has posted since back in January of 2024. Aidan Clewis was another key player, putting up 15 points and five boards.

Even though they lost, Purnell Swett smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in seven consecutive contests.

Leading Cape Fear to victory were Damien Gary and Chosen Wynn. Gary went 7 for 11 on his way to 19 points and seven assists, while Wynn went 6 of 14 en route to 12 points and seven rebounds. Gary is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Geronimo Sanchez, who went 5 for 7 on his way to 11 points.

Purnell Swett has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. As for Cape Fear, their victory bumped their record up to 6-7.

Purnell Swett has already played their next game, a 78-42 loss against Lumberton on the 29th. As for Cape Fear, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 63-37 win against Douglas Byrd on the 29th.
