Mercyhurst Prep extended their winning streak to ten on Thursday, bumping them up to 11-2. Everything went their way against the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals as they made off with a 21-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Lakers, who have now won ten games by eight runs or more so far this season.
Hunter Krahe made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI.
In other batting news, Zack Kruszewski and Noah Reigel did most of the damage at the plate: Kruszewski went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Reigel went 2-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. Reigel continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Lucca Almonte was another key player, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Mercyhurst Prep was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .486. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .474 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
As for DuBois Central Catholic, their defeat ended a nine-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 12-3. The contest marked their lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Like Mercyhurst Prep, DuBois Central Catholic also got a great game from a two-way player: Xavier Schwentner. He tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Schwentner was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Schwentner wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Carter Himes, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one double.
Coming up, Mercyhurst Prep will face off against Eisenhower at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for DuBois Central Catholic, they will square off against DuBois at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Beavers' pitching crew has only allowed 1.9 runs per game this season, so the Cardinals' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
