American Fork (Utah)'s advantage, which at one point stood at 10 points, dwindled to nine before the final whistle blew on a 27-18 victory over
Lehi (Utah).
After trailing 10-8 at the half, the Pioneers went ahead on a field goal by
Parker Ballard with 8:00 left in the third. American Fork grabbed hold of the lead when with 4:00 to go in the third quarter, and never relinquished it.
AF expanded its lead to nine points entering the fourth quarter. The Cavemen scored three times in the third, including once on a field goal.
Lopini Katoa was the top performer for American Fork. The sophomore running back ran for two touchdowns. He has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 37-18 win for AF.
The victory was a step in the right direction for the Cavemen, which was coming off a 38-21 defeat at the hands of Lone Peak in its previous game.
In a 5A Region 4 game next week Lehi (2-5) takes on Riverton, and American Fork (3-4) will go up against Bingham also in a 5A Region 4 game.
