The Wake Forest Cougars will be taking part in a tournament against the Broughton Capitals at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wake Forest is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Wake Forest fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Wakefield on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wolverines by a score of 8-6. It was the first time this season that the Cougars let down their fans at home.
Ethan Brittain put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Brittain was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in February.
In other batting news, Carlos Diaz led a balanced group of hitters, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Stephen Crater, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run.
Meanwhile, Broughton got the win against Sanderson on Thursday by a conclusive 12-2. The result was nothing new for the Capitals, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.
Sam Harris looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Broughton let Weston Rhem and Aidan Creel run wild. Rhem scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Creel scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. Rhem also hit a double, marking his first of the season. Bowen Caba was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
Broughton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in five consecutive contests.
Broughton has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Wake Forest and nudges their season record down to 10-2.
Both Wake Forest and Broughton just can't seem to miss. Wake Forest has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.4 hits per game. However, it's not like Broughton struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.3 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wake Forest took their victory against Broughton in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 14-0. Will Wake Forest repeat their success, or does Broughton has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
