The Kearns Cougars struggled with threes on Thursday (the Summit Academy Bears had five more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Kearns fell just short of Summit Academy by a score of 51-48. Kearns has struggled against Summit Academy recently, as their game on Thursday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Despite the loss, Kearns still got an impressive performance from Iman Finau, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Mina Kinikini, who scored five points.
Summit Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kita Holmes led the charge by scoring 21 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which Holmes has scored at least 25% of Summit Academy's points. Another player making a difference was Avery Backus, who scored nine points along with ten steals and five assists.
Kearns bumped their record down to 2-3 with that loss, which was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season. As for Summit Academy, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-3.
Kearns will be playing in front of their home fans against Provo at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Provo is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Summit Academy, they will head out on the road to face off against Park City at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Park City comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 24 points in their last four games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
