Big VIII recap Oct. 30, 2012
Centennial extended the longest winning streak in Big VIII this week by beating Roosevelt, 59-14. The victory was the eighth in a row for the team.
Coltin Gerhart provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Norco defeated Corona. He completed seven passes for 166 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 160 yards. Gerhart's favorite target this week was Kyle Gonzalez, who caught three passes for 97 yards.
Robert Webber put up the best numbers through the air as Centennial bested the Mustangs. He finished with 10 completions for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Webber's favorite target this week was Barry Ware, who caught two passes for 67 yards.
Nick Gibson was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 246 yards on 39 carries as the Panthers topped the Panthers. Tramel Davis also contributed to the rushing game with 28 yards on the ground.
Santiago's Michael Darr and Dorion Barnett have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Darr has thrown for 1864 yards this season, while Barnett, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 44 catches for 587 yards. Joseph Ajeigbe from Norco leads the league in rushing with 1188 yards.
The top two teams in Big VIII will face off this week when first place Centennial takes on second place Santiago. Last week, Matt Logan's team beat Roosevelt, while the Sharks defeated King.
Entering into this week's contest against Santiago, Webber is short just 198 passing yards to break 2,000 on the season. So far this year, Webber has thrown for 1802 yards with 18 touchdowns and one interceptions.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Centennial takes on Jeff Steinberg's team. The Huskies have allowed 209 points this season, while the Sharks have given up 211. Centennial allowed 14 points last week as it beat Tony Barile's team.
The Mustangs made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,820 from 2,964. The improvement was the result of 59-14 victory over Roosevelt last week.
