The Armwood Hawks posted their closest win yet this season on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Hillsborough 53-50. That's two games straight that Armwood has won by exactly three points.
Leading Armwood to victory were Mya Ankers and Na'Chauncia Welch. Ankers scored 18 points along with two steals and two blocks, while Welch scored 17 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Ankers has scored all season. Jada Mathurin was another key contributor, scoring four points along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Several Terriers players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Deana Epps, who scored 18 points along with five assists and two steals. Another player making a difference was Jojo Cruz-Smartt, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Armwood is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-6 record this season. As for Hillsborough, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-6.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Armwood on the road again on Tuesday and play against East Bay at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th. East Bay will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 448th, while Armwood is ranked 168th). As for Hillsborough, they will head out on the road to take on Alonso at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
