Softball Game Preview: Coronado Islanders vs. Mira Mesa Marauders

The Coronado Islanders will venture away from home to face off against the Mira Mesa Marauders at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mira Mesa took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Coronado, who comes in off a win.

Coronado is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over Madison last Wednesday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Islanders with their most commanding win of the season.

Ali Pecus made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Pecus was even better at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (three).

In other batting news, Jersey Cunningham was a standout: she scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-5. Those three runs gave her a new career-high. Sammy Aldworth was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

Coronado kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 20 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.3 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 12.2.

Meanwhile, Mira Mesa fell victim to Christian and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Patriots.

The win made it two in a row for Coronado and bumps their season record up to 4-7. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Mira Mesa, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

Coronado might still be hurting after the 15-1 loss they got from Mira Mesa in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Can the Islanders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
