Portage is 8-2 against Merrillville since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Indians will take on the Pirates at 5:00 p.m.
Portage blew La Porte out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Thursday La Porte got their revenge. The Indians fell just short of the Slicers by a score of 2-0. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, the Indians' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Hunter Cole spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.
Meanwhile, Merrillville had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 victory over Hammond Morton on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Pirates have posted since April 24th.
Trevor Goodwin and Kaleb Henry made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Goodwin pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Meanwhile, Henry pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April. At bat, Goodwin went 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs, and one stolen base, while Henry went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and two RBI. Goodwin is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was James Wood, who went 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Merrillville's victory bumped their record up to 5-22. As for Portage, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 12 of their last 16 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-12-2 record this season.
Portage took their win against Merrillville when the teams last played back in April by a conclusive 19-2 score. Do the Indians have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pirates turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
