Thoreau extended their losing streak to four on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 3-14 in the process. They lost 12-2 to the Estancia Bears. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bears this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 22-3 back in March.
Saige Westmoreland was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run. Another player making a difference was Sam Yazzie, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
As for Estancia, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.6 runs over those games.
On Estancia's side, Justin Rubio made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Rubio has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Estancia let Joshua Villafuerte and Michael Anaya run wild. Villafuerte got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and four runs, while Anaya went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Estancia is 2-1 when Anaya posts three or more hits, but 4-7 otherwise. Dominic Seecamp was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Looking ahead, Thoreau will face off against Wingate at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks are facing the Bears at the right time seeing as the Bears are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Estancia, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, an 11-5 defeat against Raton on the 25th.
