Nease (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) kept up a steady attack all game long to beat
Matanzas (Palm Coast, Fla.), 37-14, on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a
Ulysses Bryant touchdown run in the first quarter, the Panthers led 21-0 at the half.
Nease expanded its lead to 27 points entering the fourth quarter. NHS's lone score in the quarter came on a touchdown run by Bryant.
Jeremiah Wilson made a difference for the Pirates. The sophomore quarterback ran for two touchdowns.
The Ponte Vedra school's most effective player was Bryant. The senior running back ran for three touchdowns. He has now scored 13 touchdowns on the season.
The Panthers came in allowing an average of 25.0 points per game this season. Nease held firm on the defensive front, and kept Matanzas below the 19.0 points it had been averaging per game.
A 27-7 Nease victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Matanzas, which notched a 14-7 victory over Creekside in its previous outing. The loss snapped MHS's 2-game winning streak. With the win the Panthers extended their winning streak to three games.
In a 5A District 4 game next week Nease (5-4) takes on Creekside, and Matanzas (3-5) will go up against Palatka also in a 5A District 4 game.
