Baseball Recap: Collingswood Has No Trouble Against Holy Cross

Collingswood barely beat Holy Cross the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Panthers were the clear victors by an 18-5 margin over the Lancers on Monday. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by six runs or more this season.

Max Hess was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season.

In other batting news, Andrew Schell and Jairo Mendoza did most of the damage at the plate: Schell got on base in all five of his plate appearances with five runs, three RBI, and one stolen base, while Mendoza went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Collingswood is undefeated when Schell posts two or more runs, but 8-9 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Chase Ladik, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI.

Collingswood has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Holy Cross, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-16.

Looking ahead, Collingswood will head out to face off against Gloucester City at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Holy Cross, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Medford Tech at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lancers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Jaguars have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season.
