Independence had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 19-10 to make it five. They lost 10-3 to the Hurricane Redskins. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Redskins this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-0 on Thursday.
Independence saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Payton Boothe, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Another was Ava Parks, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
As for Hurricane, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-9 record this season. Considering they have won eight contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
On Hurricane's side, Sophie Dunlap spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits. Dunlap has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Layla Hodges was incredible, getting on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Josie Shamblin, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one double.
Independence does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Hurricane, they will challenge Riverside at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
