Softball Recap: Athens Makes It Five in a Row on the Road

Athens had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 17-run drubbing they dealt Decatur on Thursday. The Athens Golden Eagles' pitcher stepped up to hand the Decatur Red Raiders a 17-0 shutout. Considering the Golden Eagles have won eight games by more than eight runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Jaicey Harty made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in earned runs (zero). She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing Three bases. while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, Caitlyn Tedford was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, five stolen bases, and four runs. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 2.1 runs per game. Another player making a difference was Amaya Green, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.

Athens always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .690. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Decatur only posted an OBP of .100.

Athens pushed their record up to 15-6 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 12.6 runs. As for Decatur, their loss dropped their record down to 2-15.

Coming up, Athens will square off against Columbia Central at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. As for Decatur, they will take on Mae Jemison at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Decatur has given up an average of 13.5 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
