The Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes entered their tilt with the Aztec Tigers with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Pojoaque Valley strolled past Aztec with points to spare on Wednesday, taking the game 69-50. Given Pojoaque Valley's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 47th, while Aztec is ranked 127th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Pojoaque Valley found their leader in underclassman Serafin Mendez, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. Mendez is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last seven games he's played. Deondro Lopez was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six rebounds.
Pojoaque Valley's win bumped their record up to 9-7. As for Aztec, they bumped their record down to 3-11 with that loss, which was their seventh straight on the road.
Pojoaque Valley will be playing in front of their home fans against Capital at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Aztec won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Piedra Vista at 7:00 p.m. on January 18th.
