Tony Bennett's rebuilding job at Virginia took another step forward Monday morning when Greater Atlanta Christian (Norcross, Ga.) guard Malcolm Brogdon committed following a weekend visit to Charlottesville.
Greater Atlanta Christian head coach Eddie Martin confirmed Brogdon's pledge to the Cavaliers.
"I had a strong suspicion that me might (commit)," Martin said. "He told me before he went that if he really liked what he saw, that might happen. I told him not to commit on the spot and let his emotions get involved. I told him to sleep on it and if he still feels the same way in the morning then he could call them."
Brogdon followed the plan and phoned Bennett and staff Monday morning.
Ranked No. 66 in MaxPreps.com's Class of 2011 Top 100, Brogdon averaged 20.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for Georgia's Class AA state champions as a junior.
According to Martin, the 6-foot-4, 195-pounder will be a great fit in Bennett's defensive-minded system.
"He is versatile and complete player," Martin said. "That's not to say there aren't areas of his game that need improvement, but he is not just a scorer. He is a rebounder, he can defend and handle the basketball.
"That's one of the things that Coach Bennett is looking for, those perimeter players that can do different things out there."
Brogdon joins a 2011 class at Virginia that also includes Paul Jesperson, a 6-7 wing from Merrill (Wis.).
The Cavaliers signed a decorated, six-man 2010 class that featured a pair of Top 100 talents in Alabama guard K.T. Harrell and New York forward Will Regan.
