It was a good run, but the Sahuarita Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their six-game winning streak on Thursday. Their rough 75-54 loss to Sunnyside might stick with them for a while. Sahuarita has struggled against Sunnyside recently, as their contest on Thursday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Sahuarita lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Emma Benitez, who scored ten points along with five assists and five rebounds. Kealey Myhre was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five rebounds.
It was another big night for Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 15 rebounds for Sunnyside. The match was Nidez-Acu?a's 14th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ylena Gross, who scored 20 points.
Sahuarita's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-4. As for Sunnyside, their victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-1.
Sahuarita will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Douglas at 7:00 p.m. on January 4, 2024. Sunnyside and Canyon del Oro will round out the year against one another at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday at. Canyon del Oro will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 139th, while Sunnyside is ranked 12th).
