The Athens Hornets and the Lumberton Raiders squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Athens Hornets had to settle for second. Athens' rough 40-14 loss to Lumberton might stick with them for a while. Athens was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 27-7.
Lumberton's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lucas Powell, who threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75.9% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Jaddon Ward also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Athens' defeat dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Lumberton, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 8-3.
Athens does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Lumberton will square off against Needville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Needville is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
