Basketball Recap: Covington Takes a Loss

Covington was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 11th straight loss. They were outmatched by the Southmont Mounties and fell 61-29. The Trojans lost against the Mounties in their previous head to head back in January of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 43-42 score last time.

When it comes to explaining why Covington lost, don't look at Alex Sutherlin. Despite the final result, she went 6 for 15 on her way to 17 points in addition to eight rebounds and six steals. That's the most steals Sutherlin has posted since back in November of 2024.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Southmont to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kaylee Turner, who posted ten points and seven steals. Turner has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Barry, who went 7 of 14 en route to 18 points and five boards.

Covington's defeat dropped their record down to 4-20. As for Southmont, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-10.

Covington will face off against Fountain Central at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Fountain Central's defense has only allowed 28.8 points per game this season, so Covington's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Southmont, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 72-55 loss against Sheridan on the 29th.
