Chiawana and Richland are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Riverhawks will take on the Bombers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Chiawana is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
Chiawana is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Hanford, sneaking past 5-3. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since March 29, 2024, but that streak is no more.
Gabriella Garza spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on five hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Alyssa Melendez, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Jessica Melendez, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Richland entered their tilt with Kamiakin on Friday with eight consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with nine. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 3-2 W against the Braves. Those three runs were actually the fewest the Bombers have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Emmalee Mohr made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
In other batting news, Richland let Payton Chacon and Brooklynn Boyce run wild. Chacon went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, while Boyce got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs. Chacon has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played.
Chiawana's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-6. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Richland, their record is now 22-1.
Tuesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Chiawana has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .489. However, it's not like Richland struggles in that department as they've averaged .483. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Chiawana suffered a grim 9-0 defeat to Richland when the teams last played last Friday. Can the Riverhawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
