The McAllen Memorial Mustangs entered their tilt with the Vela Sabercats with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. McAllen Memorial secured a 49-43 W over Vela on Friday. The victory was all the more spectacular given McAllen Memorial's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 644th, while Vela is ranked 301st).
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead McAllen Memorial to victory, but perhaps none more so than Karly Bazan, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Borjas, who scored 13 points.
When it comes to explaining why Vela lost, one person who can't be blamed is Gg Betancourt. Despite the final result, she scored 23 points. Another player making a difference was Ava Tovar, who scored 11 points.
McAllen Memorial pushed their record up to 17-11 with that victory, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.9 points per game. As for Vela, their loss dropped their record down to 23-5.
McAllen Memorial will head out on the road to face off against McAllen at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Vela, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Sharyland at 6:00 p.m.
