The Berthoud Spartans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their third straight loss. They were the victim of a tough 62-40 defeat at the hands of Resurrection Christian. While losing is never fun, Berthoud can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 178th, while Resurrection Christian is ranked 35th).
Despite the defeat, Berthoud saw an underclassman step up: Avery Pfohl almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds. Pfohl hasn't dropped below 15 points for five straight games. Sydney Slauson was another key contributor, scoring six points along with two steals.
Resurrection Christian's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Olivia Klein led the charge by scoring 24 points along with three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Callie Gillespie, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Berthoud has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-15 record this season. As for Resurrection Christian, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 17-3.
Berthoud will head out on the road to take on Sterling at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Berthoud focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Saturday. As for Resurrection Christian, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against Colorado Academy at 5:00 p.m. Resurrection Christian is on a seven-game streak of home wins, Colorado Academy a eight-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
