Salem extended their winning streak to three on Thursday, bumping them up to 3-2. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 13-11 win over the East Marion Eagles. The Wildcats have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Eagles, too.
Keaton Roberts made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Roberts was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rustyn Boydd, who went 2-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Brogan Shepard, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Salem always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .541 or higher in three consecutive games.
As for East Marion, they dropped their record down to 0-5 with the loss, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season. Even if they couldn't come away with the victory, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.
On East Marion's side, Ayden Lewis was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Lewis also got two hits, marking his first of the season. Jaquez Hathorn was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Salem will welcome Wesson at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for East Marion, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Mount Olive at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
