After a string of four wins, the Bovina Mustangs's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 60-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of Wheeler. While losing is never fun, Bovina can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1203rd, while Wheeler is ranked 542nd).
Despite the loss, Bovina still got an impressive performance from Miguel Lopez, who scored 21 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Lopez scored a full 42.9% of Bovina's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Angel Lara, who scored seven points along with six rebounds.
Bovina struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Wheeler racked up 15 assists.
Levi Ashurst continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Wheeler, almost dropping a triple-double on 14 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists. The match was Ashurst's 15th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Austin Adkins, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds.
Bovina's defeat dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Wheeler, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.
Bovina won't have much time to rest: their next match is against River Road at 12:00 p.m. on December 30, 2023. Wheeler won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Hooker at 6:20 p.m. on December 30, 2023. Hooker knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matchups -- so hopefully Wheeler likes a good challenge.
