The Mentor Cardinals will head out on the road to take on the Kenston Bombers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mentor is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.1 runs per game this season.
It was a proper cat-fight when Mentor challenged Lake Catholic on Monday. The Cardinals fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 5-4. The Cardinals' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Austin Vanhuss made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Brayden Bortnick was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Kenston fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Holy Name on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Green Wave by a score of 6-5. The Bombers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Kenston also got a good showing from Luke Schaedler, who pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Schaedler has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Graysen Bischof was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. That home run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Nolan Gelin, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Mentor's loss dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Kenston, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-9.
Kenston's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mentor hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .376. It's a different story for Kenston, though, as they've only averaged .226. Will they be able to contain Mentor's hitters?
Everything went Mentor's way against Kenston when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Mentor made off with a 9-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cardinals since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
