Cornwall Central and Wallkill are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Dragons will be playing in front of their home fans against the Panthers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Cornwall Central will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.
Cornwall Central is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Roosevelt a 1-0 shutout. That's two games straight that the Dragons have won by just one run.
Meanwhile, Wallkill got the win against Valley Central on Wednesday by a conclusive 9-2. Considering the Panthers have won six matches by more than six runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Mason Franklin was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Wallkill is undefeated when Franklin posts two or more stolen bases, but 7-9 otherwise.
In other pitching news, Bryce Buchalter looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.
Back at the plate, Mike Daley was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Wallkill's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Ryan Mayer, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Wallkill was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .467. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Cornwall Central's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-6. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games. As for Wallkill, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season.
