The St. Petersburg Green Devils had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25.4 points), and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They claimed a resounding 49-0 win over Countryside on the road. The result was nothing new for St. Petersburg, who have now won five contests by 24 points or more so far this season.
Jeff Jones continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 211 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 12.4 yards per carry, and also throwing for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Jones is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last eight games he's played. Ge'land Calvin got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.
St. Petersburg's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Leading the way was Patrick Walker and his two sacks.
St. Petersburg's win was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 6-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-7 Dunedin and 2-7 Countryside (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 36.8% over those games). As for Countryside, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-7.
St. Petersburg will be playing in front of their home fans against Hollins at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hollins comes in still looking for their first win of the season. Countryside will have plenty of time to ponder what went wrong as they've got a bye scheduled next week. After, they'll take on East Lake at 7:30 p.m. on November 3rd.
