Hempfield has gone a perfect 10-0 against J.P. McCaskey recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Black Knights will head out on the road to challenge the Red Tornado at 4:15 p.m. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Hempfield took a nine-run loss the last time they faced off against Warwick, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Black Knights won by a run and slipped past the Warriors 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Black Knights have posted since April 27, 2024.
Kali Peifer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up 11 Ks.
Meanwhile, J.P. McCaskey gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They put the hurt on Muhlenberg with a sharp 19-7 victory. Considering the Red Tornado have won seven games by more than nine runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Lleana Martinez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Martinez was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two).
In other batting news, Alayah Gartman was a standout: she got on base in four of her six plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 2.1 runs per game. Another player making a difference was Sanya Mumma, who got on base in all six of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.
J.P. McCaskey hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in five consecutive contests.
J.P. McCaskey's win ended an eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-12. As for Hempfield, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
Everything went Hempfield's way against J.P. McCaskey in their previous matchup back in April, as Hempfield made off with a 10-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Black Knights since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
