Baseball Recap: Sunnyside Triumphs

Sunnyside hadn't beaten Marana on the road since March 2, 2018 but that history sure didn't bother them on Thursday. The Blue Devils came out on top against the Tigers by a score of 8-3. For the Blue Devils, this counts as revenge for the 3-2 victory the Tigers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

ARMANDO BEJARANO spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, ALFREDO ENCINAS and PEDRO LOPEZ did most of the damage at the plate: ENCINAS scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3, while LOPEZ scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Sunnyside is undefeated when LOPEZ posts two or more runs, but 7-8 otherwise. EMRICK THOMPSON also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

They weren't the only one making solid contact: Sunnyside kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Sunnyside's win bumped their record up to 11-8. As for Marana, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sunnyside will face off against Rincon/University at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Rangers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.37 runs per game on average), something the Blue Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Marana, they will square off against Cholla at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Chargers will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Tigers surely won't give up without a fight.
