Softball Recap: Sandia Wins Going Away Against Santa Fe

Sandia won the last time they faced Santa Fe and things went their way on Wednesday too. The Matadors were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over the Demons. Considering the Matadors have won seven contests by more than nine runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Liliana Villanueva made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Villanueva was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and three RBI.

In other batting news, Sandia let Destiny Romero and Mia Duran run wild. Romero scored three runs while going 2-for-3, while Duran scored three runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those three runs gave Romero a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Gutierrez, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.

Sandia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Fe only posted an OBP of .375.

The win made it two in a row for Sandia and bumps their season record up to 9-8. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.0 runs over those games. As for Santa Fe, they dropped their record down to 7-11 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sandia will square off against Manzano at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Santa Fe, they will head out to square off against Capital at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Jaguars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.73 runs per game on average), something the Demons will no doubt try to take advantage of.
