Watsonville and Monterey are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2017, but likely not for long. The Wildcatz will be playing at home against the Dores at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Watsonville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Monterey is facing Watsonville at the wrong time: Watsonville suffered their first home loss of the season on Wednesday and they're likely out for redemption. They lost 12-1 to the Cowboys. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Wildcatz couldn't push the score so high this time.
Mia Espinoza was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season.
Meanwhile, Monterey earned a 6-3 victory over North Salinas on Wednesday. The Dores haven't had any issues with the Vikings recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Ella Myers was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and not a single walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in May of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Monterey let Denae Lee and Anaiyah Brown run wild. Lee went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Brown scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Watsonville's defeat dropped their record down to 8-3. As for Monterey, their victory bumped their record up to 7-1-1.
Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Watsonville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .348. However, it's not like Monterey struggles in that department as they've averaged .323. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Watsonville might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Monterey in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Wildcatz have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
