Sheldon (Eugene, Ore.) received a huge boost from its defense against Thurston (Springfield, Ore.), as the unit scored 12 in defeating Thurston (Springfield, Ore.), 49-8.
The Irish were up 35-8 at the half after taking the lead on a defensive touchdown in the first quarter.
Sheldon expanded its lead to 34 points entering the fourth quarter. SHS's lone score in the quarter came on a
Dylan Lewis touchdown run.
The Eugene school put up 28 points in the first quarter en route to the win. The Irish scored on a defensive touchdown, a
Taylor Alie touchdown pass to
Connor Strahm, a touchdown pass by Alie to
Ivan Faulhaber and a defensive touchdown in the quarter.
Alie played well for Sheldon in the victory. The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
Corey Weick made a difference for the Colts. The senior quarterback ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to four on the year.
Thurston's lone touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Weick in the second quarter.
SHS had given up an average of 14.1 points prior to the contest. The eight points that THS ended with were well below its average of 23.3 coming into the game.
The Irish also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 56-14.
The loss comes after Thurston defeated Crater 33-10 last week. The loss snapped the Springfield school's 2-game winning streak.
In a 6A Southwest game next week Thurston (4-4) takes on South Eugene, and Sheldon (8-0) will go up against Grants Pass also in a 6A Southwest game.
