San Benito is on a ten-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Weslaco is on a seven-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. The San Benito Greyhounds will take on the Weslaco Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, San Benito made easy work of Los Fresnos and carried off a 38-14 victory. Given San Benito's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 229th, while Los Fresnos is ranked 466th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
San Benito had a senior duo take command as Fabian Garcia gained 224 total yards and two touchdowns and Aaron Corona threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns while completing 94.1% of his passes. Garcia was no stranger to the big play, connecting with a big catch that went for 61 yards. San Benito also got help from Justin Montemayor who showed off his sure hands for 85 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Weslaco humbled Hanna with a 44-6 victory.
Weslaco had a senior duo take command as Elias Rodriguez jr rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries and Andres Sepulveda threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns while completing 87.5% of his passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Francisco Trevino, who picked up 94 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The wins kept both teams' perfect 9-0 season records intact.
Everything came up roses for San Benito against Weslaco when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as the squad secured a 44-10 win. Will San Benito repeat their success, or does Weslaco have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
