With a playoff win on the line, Stony Point rose to the challenge on Friday. They breezed past the Sotomayor WILDCATS to the tune of 79-51. The Tigers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 19 matches by 20 points or more this season.
Stony Point had a senior duo take command as Uzziah Buntyn en route to 28 points along with eight assists and six rebounds and Elijah Clemons to rack up 20 points in addition to five assists and three steals. Buntyn is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 47% in the last ten games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jayden Cruz, who posted 11 points.
Stony Point was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sotomayor only nine assists.
Sotomayor's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Roger Thomas, who scored five points in addition to six boards and three steals. Isaac Berry was another key player, putting up seven points.
The win (which was Stony Point's 14th in a row) raised their record to 31-4. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 29.5 points. As for Sotomayor, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 18-15 record this season.
Stony Point will venture away from home to square off against Judson at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (Judson has won five straight at home, while Stony Point won 20 straight on the road dating back to last season), something that'll have to change.
