Video: Wyatt Davis ultimate highlightsSt. John Bosco offensive tackle Wyatt Davis is the MaxPreps California large schools player of the year.
It's not often that an offensive lineman can have such an effect on a ballgame to be named player of the year. But it's not often that a player like Wyatt Davis comes around.
A senior offensive tackle for CIF State Open Division champion St. John Bosco, Davis was a huge weapon on the offensive line for a team that averaged 485 yards per game and knocked off the likes of Mater Dei and De La Salle in the process.
The grandson of former Green Bay Packer and Hall of Fame defensive lineman Willie Davis, Wyatt Davis is the 2016 MaxPreps California Large Schools Player of the Year.
Davis led St. John Bosco to a Southern Section Division I championship after previously losing to Mater Dei (Santa Ana) in Trinity League play. St. John Bosco's only other loss was to national champion Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas).
Along the way, Davis was named Player of the Year by both the Los Angeles Times and the Long Beach Press-Telegram. He heads a list of 60 players named to the MaxPreps California Large Schools All-State Team. The team consists of players who compete in state enrollment divisions that generally have more than 2,000 students.
The California large schools Coach of the Year is Rick Jackson of Madison (San Diego). In the San Diego Section Division I championship game, Jackson's Warhawks overcame a 31-7 halftime deficit to win the title 35-31. The following week in the CIF regional playoffs, Madison overcame a 47-28 deficit with seven minutes left in the game to win 60-53 in overtime.
Madison went on to defeat Valley Christian (San Jose) 21-17 for the Division 2-AA state championship.
