The Sacred Heart of Jesus Comets will face off against the La Salle Lancers at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
If Sacred Heart of Jesus beats La Salle with 15 runs on Thursday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. The Comets were the clear victors by a 15-3 margin over Pomona Catholic on Tuesday. The win was familiar territory for the Comets, who have now won six games in a row.
Alina Valenzuela made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Melania Saborio, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. What's more, she posted two doubles, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Yelena Moran, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Sacred Heart of Jesus was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .393 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, while La Salle put up plenty of runs on Tuesday, the same can't be said for St. Bernard. The Lancers put the hurt on the Vikings with a sharp 31-0 victory. The win was nothing new for the Lancers as they're now sitting on five straight.
Olivia Ferrari made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Ferrari was also big at the plate, scoring five runs and stealing a base while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances.
In other batting news, Jessica Young was incredible, going 4-for-5 with eight RBI, three doubles, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Aria Davis, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
La Salle pushed their record up to 8-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 22.0 runs over those games. As for Sacred Heart of Jesus, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Sacred Heart of Jesus has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like La Salle struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
