Athens is 2-8 against Mendon since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Indians will challenge the Hornets at 5:00 p.m. Athens has given up an average of 12 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Athens managed to slip by Reading the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Indians came up short against the Rangers on Saturday, falling 13-3.
Meanwhile, Mendon entered their tilt with Bangor on Wednesday with ten consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with 11. They put the hurt on the Vikings with a sharp 16-1 victory. Considering the Hornets have won ten contests by more than nine runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Rowan Allen made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
In other batting news, Mendon let Sabrina Monroy and Jadyn Samson run wild. Monroy went 2-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI, while Samson went 2-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave Monroy a new career-high. Cienna Nightingale was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI.
Mendon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .625. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bangor only posted an OBP of .143.
Athens' loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Mendon, their record now sits at 11-1.
Athens might still be hurting after the 21-2 defeat they got from Mendon in their previous meeting on April 14th. Can the Indians avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
