The American Eagles will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against the Newark Memorial Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on January 24th. Hopefully American focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Thursday.
American's game was all tied up 28-28 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They fell 58-51 to Irvington. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for American in their matchups with Irvington: they've now lost five in a row.
Despite their defeat, American saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Kiratraj Sanghera, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Sanghera hasn't dropped below 15points for 17 straight games. Tanvir Chatrath was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Newark Memorial's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their seventh straight loss. They received a tough blow as they fell 66-49 to Moreau Catholic. While losing is never fun, Newark Memorial can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 898th, while Moreau Catholic is ranked 180th).
American's record is now 12-7. As for Newark Memorial, their loss was their fifth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 4-15.
Everything came up roses for American against Newark Memorial when the teams last played back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 71-42 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for American since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
