After flying high against the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest Javelinas on Tuesday, the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North Raiders came back down to earth. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North was dealt a 83-43 defeat at the hands of Vela on Friday. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North has not had much luck with Vela recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Vela got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ej Avelar out in front who scored 20 points along with three steals. Avelar hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Axel Garza, who scored 11 points along with six steals and five rebounds.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. As for Vela, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North will finish 2023 at home by hosting Sharyland at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Sharyland and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North are at an even 3-3 over their past six head-to-heads. Vela will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against McAllen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. McAllen will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 461st, while Vela is ranked 139th).
