Baseball Recap: Granite Falls Wins Going Away Against Mount Vernon Christian

Granite Falls barely beat Mount Vernon Christian the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Tigers blew past the Hurricanes 12-5 on Thursday. Considering the Tigers have won six matchups by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Drake Smith made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Granite Falls is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-9 otherwise. Smith was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two triples, five RBI, and one run. He is on a roll when it comes to triples, as he's now hit at least one in each of the last three games he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kaden Sturm, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. He also got a hit, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Landon Gwinner, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Granite Falls' victory bumped their record up to 9-10. As for Mount Vernon Christian, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-5 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Granite Falls will head out to face off against Orcas Island at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Vikings will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Tigers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mount Vernon Christian, they will take on La Conner at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Hurricanes are facing the Braves at the right time seeing as the Braves are stuck on a three-game losing streak.
