Woodlawn is a perfect 6-0 against Gurdon since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Bears will face off against the Go-Devils at 4:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Gurdon will be up against a hot Woodlawn team: the squad just extended their winning streak to five. Everything went the Bears' way against Bauxite on Thursday as they made off with an 11-5 victory. Considering the Bears have won 14 contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Logan Clark and Tate Hall were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Clark struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Hall struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. Clark has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At bat, Clark got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, while Hall went 1-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Garrett Weatherford was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted over his last eight matches. Another player making a difference was Hollis Holderfield, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gurdon). Their pitcher stepped up to hand Poyen a 10-0 shutout on Wednesday. The win was some much needed relief for the Go-Devils as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Gurdon got a big performance out of Nate Newton, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Jonah Jester also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.
Gurdon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .517. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Poyen only posted an OBP of .235.
Gurdon's victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 2-5. As for Woodlawn, they pushed their record up to 19-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.
Woodlawn took their victory against Gurdon in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 15-4 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bears since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
