Aztec is 0-10 against the Patriots since January of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Aztec Tigers are on the road again and plays the Miyamura Patriots at 7:00 p.m. on February 2nd. Hopefully Aztec focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 26 on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Aztec took a serious blow against the Bengals, falling 61-31. Aztec was down 50-27 at the end of the third quarter, and things only got worse from there.
Aztec's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Jazzlyn Gomez, who scored 11 points, and Kira Roberts who scored three points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Roberts has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played.
Meanwhile, Miyamura scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They were the clear victor by a 60-36 margin over Shiprock. That looming 60-36 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Miyamura yet this season.
Kaytoinette Ross had a dynamite game for Miyamura, scoring 23 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Ross has scored at least a third of Miyamura's points. Another player making a difference was Autumn Dennison, who scored nine points.
Aztec has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-10 record this season. As for Miyamura, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-14.
Aztec came up short against the Patriots when the teams last played back in February of 2023, falling 36-31. Can Aztec avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
