The Clayton Comets will head out on the road to challenge the Cleveland Rams at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Clayton's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last eight contests.
Clayton posted their biggest win yet this season on Friday. They blew past Corinth Holders 81-36 at home. Given Clayton's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 44th, while Corinth Holders is ranked 586th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Andrew Grimes continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 27 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Justice Mitchell was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with six rebounds and two blocks.
Cleveland lost a heartbreaker when they last took the court, but unfortunately for them the loss they were handed on on Friday was a bit more commanding. They were beaten by South Garner 64-37. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Cleveland in their matchups with South Garner: they've now lost three in a row.
Clayton pushed their record up to 12-4 with that victory, which was their ninth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.2 points per game. As for Cleveland, they now have a losing record at 7-8.
Everything came up roses for Clayton against Cleveland in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 as the team secured a 84-55 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Clayton since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
