Two dominant guards in Cassandra Coolidge and Isabella Webb are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Sahuaro Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Mica Mountain Thunderbolts at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Sahuaro focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Wednesday.
After a string of four wins, Sahuaro's good fortune finally ran out. They took a hard 68-49 fall against Salpointe Catholic. While losing is never fun, Sahuaro can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 44th, while the Lancers are ranked fifth).
Despite the defeat, Sahuaro had strong showings from Coolidge, who scored 17 points along with two steals, and Ny'Anza Brown, who scored 11 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Biale Sika, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, Mica Mountain unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Thursday. They were dealt a 60-25 defeat at the hands of Salpointe Catholic. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Mica Mountain has scored all season.
The losing side was boosted by Webb, who scored 14 points along with three steals.
Mica Mountain struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Salpointe Catholic racked up 14 assists.
Sahuaro's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 20-8. As for Mica Mountain, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-8.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Sahuaro have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 25.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Mica Mountain struggles in that department as they've been averaging 35.8 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Everything came up roses for Sahuaro against the Thunderbolts in their previous meeting back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 74-25 victory. With Sahuaro ahead 44-11 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.
