It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but The Gonzales Apaches ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They managed a 44-38 victory over Giddings. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Among those leading the charge was Rocky Gallegos, who rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. The team also got some help courtesy of Cole Duty, who rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Gonzales, racking up 12 points in total. All those points came courtesy of Brandon Duenez: he added nine points with three field goals, and another two kicking extra points.
Despite the defeat, Giddings saw an underclassman step up: Bryson Mcdaniel rushed for 284 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.8 yards per carry. Mcdaniel's longest rush was for an incredible 70 yards.
Gonzales' win was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 6-3. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-10 Cedar Creek and 3-7 Giddings (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 29.1% over those games). As for Giddings, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.
Gonzales will take on Gatesville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Giddings, they will take on Connally at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Connally will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
